  1. Milestones:Processing and Manufacturing Group NSF/DOE/APC Workshop: The Future of Modeling in Composites Molding Processes June 9-10, 2004

  2. Injection Molding Milestone: Complete the IPPD loop for long-fiber thermoplastics Gaps: • fiber orientation, fiber length attrition • properties and durability • crystallization/shrink/warp We are there when: complete software package is available, provides results that we trust

  3. Liquid Molding 1 Milestone: Include preform processes and preform architecture in the IPPD loop Gaps: • relate preform architecture to permeability and processing • relate preform architecture to properties and performance We are there when: • part properties can be reliably and repeatably produced, and can be optimized

  4. Liquid Molding 2 Milestone: Increase the speed of the process Gaps: • preform architectures for rapid filling • understanding saturation for fast filling • preform deformation/fiber wash • flow and cure optimization • . . . (any other ways that modeling can address this issue) We are there when: cycle times approach 1 minute, with a technology that can be applied to new parts without trial-and-error
