  4. Why were myths important? • Explanations of the way of the world? • Religious purposes? • Heroes? • Monsters? • Hopes/Fears? • Why do we have myths in our culture today? What are they? Who are our heroes?

  5. Myths today? What are they myths about? What do they explain or reveal about the world? Are they based on courage, strength, bravery, supernatural? Do we still create our own myths? Where do we get them?

  6. James Thurber (1894-1961) • Author of Fables from Our Time • He was an American writer and artist. One of the most popular humorists (writers of clever humor) of his time, Thurber celebrated in stories and in cartoons the comic frustrations of eccentric yet ordinary people.

  10. Today’s Assignment Consider the myths that are popular today. When do we see interviews or stories about these myths? Who are the experts or people interviewed? Your assignment today is to write (and act out), a brief script of the sighting or recent development of your current myth. Be sure to consider the following: • Where did the sighting or recent development take place? • Who could you interview? • What do you want the general public to know about the myth? What if they have never heard of it before? • What is the best way to present your facts and detail (interview, news report, TV show, game show?)
