  1. 4th World Water Forum Local Actions for a Global Challenge Mexico 2006 4th World Water Forum

  2. Water is essential for life; without water there is not, there cannot exist any possible form of life.

  3. Development of ancient and prosperous civilizations was possible mainly due to the fact that they settled near important sources of water, usually great rivers.

  4. Gradually, countries have given greater importance to a more efficient use and preservation of water. A greater conscience has now risen, and nations realize that waste and scarcity of this resource might affect social welfare and limit development. Day by day, nations are more interested in sharing their own experiences and in knowing how effective solutions have been implemented to solve different challenges regarding water issues.

  5. Therefore, World Water Forums have become one of the most important events at the international level. World Water Forums are held every three years. The 4th World Water Forum will be held in Mexico City, from March 16th to 22nd, 2006.

  6. The main theme of the 4th World Water Forum is: “Local Actions for a Global Challenge”

  7. Local Actions/ Projects • Local Actions/ Projects are • any water-related activities which are implemented in practical and tangible ways to have a impact on local water management. • not necessarily small scale.

  8. One of the main features of the Forum in Mexico is that it will aim to display a broad range of experiences and successful projects and actions that have been carried out in regard with water.

  9. It is expected that all these experiences and projects may be shared by the countries of the world, with the purpose of contributing to enable better ways of living for their inhabitants. The challenge that we all face up to, goes further than just preserving our rivers and aquifers, supplying water and sanitation services or merely achieving an efficient use of water: It is about creating a better world.

  10. We are all involved in water matters; it is a fact that we have participated in successful experiences and outstanding projects that we would like to share throughout the globe. In order to achieve this goal, we have to register our projects through the online application which is available on the 4th World Water Forum website: www.worldwaterforum4.org.mx

  11. In order to facilitate the selection and consultation of projects and experiences, the countries of the world have been divided into five regions: • Africa. • Americas. • Asia-Pacific. • Europe. • Middle East.

  12. With the purpose of bringing in the greatest possible number of successful experiences and projects, regional meetings and local workshops are being carried out within each one of the five regions. In such meetings, statements are also established concerning water management constraints, and solutions are proposed; all of which will be presented in a series of regional documents.

  13. In addition, these outputs will be submitted to the Ministers that will participate during the Forum.

  14. It should be pointed out that as part of the preparatory process to the Forum, Virtual Workshops are being organized and are available on the website to debate relevant topics regarding water. Anyone of us can coordinate or participate in a Virtual Workshop.

  15. Virtual workshops are a web-based deliberative arena where people are encouraged to exchange different points of view and successful experiences and outstanding projects. More details concerning Virtual Workshops can be found on the Forum website.

  16. It is very important that we send out e-mails to any institutions, organizations, actors or stakeholders involved in water issues, in order to invite them to register their successful experiences, projects and actions on the Forum website. Let us remember that by doing so, we will contribute to spreading them, so that people from all over the world can scale up and duplicate that knowledge.

  17. Selected experiences and projects will be added to the database that will be distributed among the Forum’s participants. The most significant projects will be presented during the Forum sessions or through posters.

  18. It is appropriate to mention that organizations and institutions interested in being session conveners can register on the Forum website.

  19. During the Forum, one may have the opportunity of attending a great broad of activities, such as: • Sessions to present successful projects and experiences. • The presentation of regional documents. • The presentation of thematic documents. • Keynote speakers.

  20. We will know about the services and support offered by different institutions, agencies and non-governmental organizations. • In addition, we can visit the Water Expo of manufacturers and suppliers related to water from all over the world. • The Forum will also offer a wide range of artistic and cultural activities.
