  11. David Suzuki Secondary School How is secondary school different? • 2 semesters per year • each grade 9 student to take 8 courses, 4 each semester • the school day includes 4 classes and one common lunch in a cafeteria with full services

  13. David Suzuki Secondary School Ontario Secondary School Diploma Requirements: 30 Credits to Graduate 18 Compulsory Credits 12 Optional Credits 40 hours of Community Service Successful Completion of Literacy Test or Equivalent - Grade 10

David Suzuki Secondary School 40 Hours of Community Service • student responsibility to complete over four years • basic approach is to complete this early (but you cannot start until your grade 9 year has started • Parental/family support and monitoring is required • Information and forms will be available in the Student Services Department • More information is available at www.peelschools.org where you need to go to “Student Stuff”

David Suzuki Secondary School Grade 10 Literacy Test • Taken in grade 10 • Administered annually at the end of March • Evaluates reading and writing skills in all subjects up to the end of grade 9 • Designed and graded by EQAO, results in June • Student transcript marked as complete or incomplete • Test can be retaken or student may take OLC 400

David Suzuki Secondary School Academic Courses (Math, English, Science, French, History, Geography) Emphasize theory and abstract concepts and applications Have greater opportunities for independent , self-directed learning. Class size up to 32. Academic courses can lead to college, university, and apprenticeship level courses in grades 11 and 12.

Class size up to 22. Applied courses lead to college level, apprenticeship level, and the world of work level courses in grades 11 and 12.

When choosing the course level, consideration must be given to the: • recommendation of elementary school teachers as it relates to the student’s success and past performance in various subject areas • fact that courses are different in emphasis and pace • fact that students can take a combination of academic, applied, and locally developed course

David Suzuki Secondary School Course Selection Process Students will: • receive course selection sheet • review this sheet with their grade 8 teacher and /or guidance counselor • complete the course selection sheet with the assistance of their parent/guardian • submit the course selection sheet to their current school by November 24 • enter their courses online with the help of David Suzuki Staff

David Suzuki Secondary School Course Selection Process Elementary School Staff will: • review the courses selection sheets submitted by the grade 8 students • address any discrepancies with the students and their parent/guardian • assist in the online course selection process that takes place between December 7 and 16
