Workplace Exam Standards Update

On June 2, 2018 MSHA updated the standards for workplace examinations. The biggest changes to the stadard are that the examination must be done in a work area before work is performed there, affected miners must be notified of any hazards found and the examination record must be created during the same shift as the hazard was identified. Also, there are now specific details that must be in the exam record documentation.

  1. Workplace Exam Standards Update Workplace Examinations On June 2, 2018 MSHA updated the standards for workplace examinations. The biggest changes to the stadard are that the examination must be done in a work area before work is performed there, affected miners must be notified of any hazards found and the examination record must be created during the same shift as the hazard was identified. Also, there are now specific details that must be in the exam record documentation. Example, compliant documentation is available on the MSHA website: https://www.msha.gov/regulations/sample-templates-and-checklists LOCK-OUT Place a lock to isolate the circuit and prevent it from being turned on Only the technician performing the work should place the lock Only the technician performing the work should remove the lock Multiple technicians will result in multiple locks on the same circuit.     TAG-OUT Large tags are placed on the lock(s) to make them more visible These tags will likely provide more information about the work being performed and who is performing it Always follow the exact protocol for tag-out at your mine site TRY-OUT    Never assume that if you have locked out a circuit that it is off Always verify a lock-out by testing the equipment before beginning maintenance work   Email: jennifer@focusontraining.net | Phone: 303-771-5107
