This publication… • is building on a previous ECML project (1999 - 2003) that produced Mirrors and windows – an intercultural communication textbook (2003); • is the result of the work of fifteen of the teacher educators who participated at our project’s central workshop in Graz in October 2004;

  5. This publication… • can be used as a teacher’s or trainer’s book with Mirrors and Windows or with any other intercultural communication coursebook; • can serve as a resource book that gives theoretical and practical guidance and supplementary materials to help in the planning and implementation of intercultural communication courses and workshops;

  6. This publication… • is available in French for teachers and trainers who use the French adaptation of Mirrors and windows in their work (Miroirs et fenêtres, 2006); • was presented and parts of it were tried out at 12 National Training Events (NTEs) in the project participants’ home countries in 2005 and 2006; • consists of a printed booklet and a CD-Rom and comprises two parts as described below:

  7. Two parts • Part One: Guidelines for the development of intercultural communicativecompetence (ICC) (Ildikó Lázár with Michaela Čaňková, Aina Kackere, Gabriela S. Matei, Christiane Peck, Veronika Rot Gabrovec and Gerlind Vief-Schmidt) • Part Two: Guidelines for the assessment of intercultural communicativecompetence (ICC) (Denise Lussier with Siyka Chavdarova-Kostova, Ksenia Golubina, Daniel Ivanus, Guadelupe de Maya Retamar, Liljana Skopinskaja and Silvia Wiesinger)

The printed booklet of our publication contains the introduction to • the definitions of key terms in intercultural communication training; • the planning and implementation of intercultural communication courses and workshops; • the guidelines for the use of materials and activities based on literature, films and songs to develop intercultural competence; • guidelines, descriptors and a framework of reference for assessing intercultural competence.

The bulk of the materials can be found on the accompanying CD-Rom • the theoretical background to intercultural communication training in language teaching and teacher education; • workshop and course planning guidelines, including checklists, questionnaires and templates; • teaching materials with sample lesson plans and descriptions of activities based on poetry, fairy tales, short stories, films and songs; • methods of assessment and descriptors of competences;

  10. the assessment of the three dimensions of ICC with concrete assessment tasks; • research articles on the role of culture in language teaching and on representations of others and other cultures in teacher education; • workshop reports and project information; • the participants’ reflections on the lessons learnt from the intercultural communication workshops (NTEs) held in Prague, Riga, Bratislava, Žilina, Budapest, Nottoden, Kaunas, Sulejówek, Ljubljana, Stuttgart, Graz, Zagreb and Malmö in 2005 and 2006.
