  3. EU Design Standards • Framed as a specific generalization • The big picture/big idea • Statement at the heart of the discipline • Framed in student friendly language • Helps to unpack the standards to increase student understanding • A “forever”

  4. EU Design Standards Avoid… • Simple facts • Definitions

  5. EU Examples English • Examining injustice and tolerance through literature encourages readers to examine these issues in their own lives. Social Studies • The universality of human response to problems transcends time, place and or technology.

  6. What makes a question Essential?

  7. EQ Design Standards • Have no one obvious “right” answer • Are related to an Enduring Understanding • Framed in student friendly language • Are designed to provoke and sustain student interest • Raise other important questions • Should be revisited throughout the year and across grade levels

  8. EQ Design Standards Avoid… Questions that are too general and represent only a loose connection to a standard

  9. EQ Examples English • How does art (song, text, visual art, etc.) evoke a culture's ethos or character? (as in: What is particularly "American" about a given artist? or How does an artist represent his or her era?) Social Studies •  Whose America is it?
