  4. Plaster molds are made from an oil based clay called Plastilina

  5. Since Plastilina is oil based it never dries out!

  6. Perfect for carving and making sculptures

  7. Sculptors sculpt (form) the object they want to cast

  9. You can view it • from all sides

  10. After the sculpture is made

  11. The artist makes a plaster mold

  12. Plaster starts as a dry powder similar to mortar or cement

  13. It’s mixed with water to form a paste

  14. which liberates heat and then hardens.

  15. Next step

  16. The artist makes a wooden frame and puts the Plastilinasculpture in the wooden frame

  17. The artist then pours the plaster around the sculpture

  18. After the plaster dries • The artist pulls the plaster away from the clay

  19. This leaves a negative space- • A plaster Mold!

  20. After making a mold • The artist can fill it with clay/other materials and re-use it many times

  21. This is how doll heads are made !

  22. And poly resin molding for homes (trim work)

  23. If the artist uses only one side of the mold he is making a Bas-Relief

  24. A bas-relief is when you can only see one side (for viewing) when the piece is completed

  25. If the artist uses both sides of the mold he/she is making a Sculpture
