  1. Update of the frictional cooling studies at Nevis Labs R. Galea Columbia University A. Caldwell (Columbia) S. Schlenstedt (DESY/Zeuthen) H. Abramowicz (TAU) Columbia Summer Students: C. Georgiou D. Greenwald Y, Ning W. Serber I. Shpiro

  2. Frictional Cooling: The idea Cool m’s where dE/dx a band compensate energy loss through E-field:cooling Below ionization peak dE/dx is dominated by: • nuclear recoil • excitation • m+ charge exchange, & m- capture Issues/consequences/comments: • large dE/dx : work with low density gas • With we will never get below the peak therefore apply R. Galea IIT/FNAL

  3. Frictional Cooling : particle trajectory calculated with continuous energy loss R. Galea IIT/FNAL

  4. Frictional Cooling: stop the m need low initial m momenta R. Galea IIT/FNAL

  5. Frictional Cooling Scheme Optimize: target, phase rotation & cooling channel R. Galea IIT/FNAL

  6. Target System: study II R. Galea IIT/FNAL

  7. Experimental Work at Nevis • We want to measure the energy loss, the m-scapture, test cooling principle R. Galea IIT/FNAL

  8. R. Galea IIT/FNAL

  9. MultiWire Proportional Chamber • Single Wire prototype constructed, tested with P10 • Ongoing: Multiwire, use Xe gas. R. Galea IIT/FNAL

  10. MicroChannelPlate • MCP used to measure ms & e • Use a,b,g sources in 4 MeV p beam at Nevis & 10-40 KeV m beam at PSI MCP: front side Accelerating grid
