  1. SNApp (The Secretive netting application)

  2. Contents : • The idea behind SnApp • Registering App • Opening App • SnApp Database • Uploading Photos • If your photos are not needed • Police assistance • Possible Ethical Issues and warnings.

  3. The Idea behind SnApp • The proposed idea behind SnApp is to work in many ways. For the public to be able to capture criminal behavior or even to feel safer walking down their street. It would be an App for a smart phone that would instantly open the users camera function and automatically start uploading the users photos to the SnApp database. This means that should anything happen to the users phone, the images will be available still and only accessible by the police.

  4. Registering App • The first stage after downloading the App would be to register your name to SnApp database and the database would then instantly give you a code that your photos would fit to. Name: _________ Mobile: _________

  5. Opening App • Upon opening SnApp the first thing you should see is the the camera function working. This means that as little time as possible is wasted in relation to the occurrence of a crime.

  6. SnApp Database • The SnApp database would be a federal only accessed top secret database of the publics images. Once people sign up and register their app to a specific phone, all photos taken with the app open would store on it for a certain amount of time with a max amount of capacity per user. This means SnApp would be like a one way Dropbox or Google Drive for the user.

  7. Uploading Photos • Must be fast and automatic using 3g (after photo click) • Must save each photo to a specific size i.e. 1 mb. This decision would be made on a delicate balance of general quality to general upload time • There are some advantages and disadvantages to using a reverse RSS feed system for example.

  8. Police assistance • After your photos have been uploaded and if you should need to contact the police; you should do so in the normal way but quoting you SnApp reference within the allotted time not yet decided. Now you have your own evidence for the police to use. • Should anything happen to you or your phone in the mean time, your pictures will still be online for the police to use under your name. This system should make crimes much harder to “get away with” and give the public more safety and control; the police more to work with and all while hopefully saving lives.

  9. If your photos are not needed • I suspect in a lot of cases the photos will be cases of over cautiousness by the user. • If the photos are not needed then they will simply be deleted automatically by the system after the allotted time has passed freeing up more space for the users account. • This means that only pictures related to reported incidents will be looked at. • So in effect this system would filter itself.

  10. Possible Ethical Issues And Warnings • Some may argue that this may cause invasion of privacy but I would argue no more than the use of normal cameras as the database photos go to would be for police access only and would not even be looked at by another human if no case is reported to the police and would be automatically deleted. • A warning to the user should be made to make the user aware of possible consequences of “being a hero” and getting caught as to not make SnApp liable but this would be no different than taking normal photos other than an automatic upload.
