  18. A training in Biomedicine, what’s it all about?- a short story from our current research Child A presents to doctor with repeated infections Pharmacologists develop a treatment regime using drugs which restores the function of the immune system Microbiologists determine the types of infections and immune response of the patient enabling doctor to stabilise the patient, but what’s the cause? Biochemists characterise the faulty protein and show how its structure is affected by the mutation. They discover molecules which may be used as new drugs. A brother has similar symptoms so geneticists screen their genomes for gene changes. A gene is indentified which may cause the problem. Physiologists characterise the behaviour of the cells and confirm that they show unusual behaviour. Also suggest some existing drugs which might help.
