  14. The United States Takes Hawaii • Hawaii was important to the United States • Stop on the way to China & East India • Missionaries founded Christian schools • Sugar merchants

  15. Hawaii’s Economy • American owned sugar plantations all over Hawaii • 1875 – Allowed the sale of sugar to US without a tax • 1887 – Only rich landowners could vote

  16. 1887 – Built Pearl Harbor (American naval base) • 1890 – McKinley Tariff eliminated tax free status of sugar

  17. Queen Lili • When the king died, his sister became the queen • Queen Lili proposed a law that got rid of property qualifications for voting • This would give power to the native born Hawaiians

  18. January 16, 1893 • USS Boston appeared in the harbor • Marines protected American interests • Volunteer troops took over the government building • Queen Lili was imprisoned in her palace • Sanford B. Dole - president of Hawaii

  19. The new government asked to be part of the United States • President Grover Cleveland refused and said Queen Lili should be queen again • Sanford Dole refused to surrender • Clevelandrecognized the Republic of Hawaii

  20. Hawaii Becomesan American Territory • The next president (McKinley) favored annexation • August 12, 1898 Congress proclaimed Hawaii as an American Territory • Hawaiians did not have a choice
