  3. Cell Structure and Function • All living things made up of 1 or more cells • Basic structure is same in all living organisms Reproduction • All living things can reproduce • Essential for continuation of life…why?

  4. Metabolism • Obtain and use energy for life processes • Almost always originates from the sun Homeostasis • Maintain a stable internal environment to function properly

  5. Heredity • All living things able to pass on traits to offspring through genes Evolution • Long history of change causes life diversity • Individuals in a species are similar, not identical Interdependence • Biological community of interacting organisms

  6. Section 2 • Environment • Food Supply • Human Genome • Diseases: AIDS, Cancer, EIDs, Gene Therapy

  7. Section 3 • Observation Prediction/Hypothesis Experiment Theory

  8. Stages of Scientific Investigation There is no one “method” • Common stages: • Collecting observations • Asking questions • Forming hypotheses • Making predictions • Confirming predictions • Drawing conclusions

  9. 3. Hypothesis Vs Predictions • Hypothesis explanation that might be true, can be tested... • An “educated guess” based off of what you already know • “if, then” statement • Prediction the expected outcome of a test, assuming the hypothesis is correct

Scientific Explanations • Theory a set of related hypotheses that have been tested and confirmedmany times by many scientists. • Need to use both the accepted and rejected hypotheses • Carry out many experiments • Is NOT absolute! But is accepted in the scientific community as a truth (principle)
