  1. WBS 6.3.3 Conductor Procurement • Rich Smith • DOE/NSF Review • 8 May 2001

  2. WBS 6.3.3 Conductor Procurement • Fermilab – ETHZ -- CERN • Conductor Component Procurement • Superconducting Strand (~$2212K) • Aluminum Alloy Reinforcement (~$701K) • Pure Aluminum Stabilizer (~$973K) • Independent QC Verification

  3. 22.0 mm Structural Aluminum EB Weld Zone 32 Strand Rutherford Superconducting Cable 64.0 mm High Purity Aluminum EB Weld Zone Structural Aluminum Conductor Ic = 55.6 kA at 4.2 K, 5 Tesla 1.28 mm Strand, Cu:SC Ratio = 1.1 Conductor Configuration • Magnet Conductor • Twenty + One 2550 m lengths required

  4. Superconducting Strand Procurement Progress 60% order placed on Outokumpu (Finland)July 08, 1999 40% order placed on Intermagnetics General Corp (USA)July 08, 1999 IGC, OKSC Contracts to be completed Jun/Oct 2000 1st OKSC Article (one cable) On TimeOct 29, 1999 OKSC 1st Article (Quality Very Good) Accepted by CMS Dec 13, 1999 1st IGC Article (one cable) 15 wks lateFeb 15, 2000 IGC 1st Article Accepted (Quality very Poor) by Fermilab Apr 12, 2000 IGC 2nd Article (one cable) Completed (Quality Apparently OK)Nov 15, 2000 IGC Unable to Complete prior to Feb 2002, Contract CancelledOct 20, 2000 Balance of Work awarded to OKSC Dec 01, 2000 OKSC Modified Contract to be completed Oct 30, 2001 OKSC Quality Excellent, Presently Running ~ 1 month late

  13. Aluminum Alloy Reinforcement • Aluminum Alloy Procurement Progress • Contract (~125 tons) Awarded to Alusuisse Swiss AluminumMar 13, 2000 • Contract (10 test bars, 40 production bars) to be Completed Jun 30, 2001 • 1st Article (2 300 m short bars) On TimeJune 08, 2000 • 2nd Article (6 2650 m commissioning bars) On TimeSept 01, 2000 • 3rd Article (2 1100 m test bars) On TimeSept 01, 2000 • 4th Article (20 production bars) In progress, 8 weeks lateMar 01, 2001 • 5th Article (20 production bars) To be Completed June 30, 2001

  14. Where Do These Components Go? EB Welding (ETHZ/CERN, not USCMS CP)

  15. Where Do These Things Go? Conductor Straightening, Prebending at Ansaldo (INFN/CERN)

  16. Conclusions • Loss of 2nd Vendor for Superconducting Strand Removes Luxury of Generous Slack in Strand Procurement Schedule; Remaining slack now ~ 3 months • 1st Vendor’s Superconducting Strand is of Excellent Quality; Responsive to Increased Order • Pure Aluminum Quality Excellent; Contingent Quantity to be Ordered Soon • Aluminum Alloy Quality Excellent, Vendor Responsive; Expected to Complete Successfully; Schedule has ~8 months slack
