  2. 4 types of cellular transport • Passive Transport • Facilitated Diffusion • Active Transport • Bulk Transport

  3. Passive Transport • This is the one we’ve been talking about • Diffusion: random movement from high concentration to low concentration • Osmosis: the diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane • Does not use any cellular energy (ATP)

  4. Facilitated diffusion • Sometimes called facilitated transport • Uses a carrier protein in the cell membrane to move a substance across the membrane • Materials move down the concentration gradient • Change in shape of the membrane protein occurs without using any cellular energy. • Used for some amino acids and sugars. • Page 87 textbook

  5. Active Transport • Moves materials against the concentration gradient. • Requires the use of energy (ATP) by the cell • Uses a carrier protein in the cell membrane • See Page 89 of the textbook.

  6. Bulk transport(Textbook pages 90- 91) • Endocytosis • “inside cell” • Cell membranes surround and engulf material • Uses cell energy (ATP) • Two types • Phagocytosis-”cell eating”. Cell takes in solid particles … food • Pinocytosis-”cell drinking” … Cell takes in liquids … usually water.

  7. Bulk transport • Exocytosis • “Outside cell” • Is the opposite process of endocytosis • Result is the emptying of particles or solids or liquids out of the cell. • Requires the use of energy (ATP) from the cell.
