  2. 1-6 Relations Objectives: By the end of this class period, with an 85% accuracy, students will be able to: • Represent relations in multiple ways • Describe what is happening in graphs of relations • Identify dependent and independent variables in real-life situations

  3. The Coordinate plane • A coordinate system (coordinate plane) is formed by the intersection of two number lines: • the horizontal axis - • is called the x-axis • the vertical axis - • is called the y-axis

  4. The coordinate plane is divided into 4 quadrants. • An ordered pair is the set of numbers (x, y) that represent a point on the graph. • Example (2, 4) (x, y) The origin is the point (0, 0) where the axes intersect. It does not lie in a quadrant.

  5. Relations • A relation is a set of ordered pairs. It can be represented in several ways • With a mapping • With a table • In a graph • As an equation • A mapping shows how each element in the domain is paired with each element in the range. • Draw 2 ovals and arrows mapping the x-values to the y-values. Example:

  6. 3 Ways to represent a relation Map the relation: {(0, -2) (1, 2), (0, 1), (3, 4) and (2, 1)} Then draw a table for the relation. Mapping – Do not repeat numbers. Table – Put the x coordinates in numerical order Now draw a graph of the relation on the graph paper provided (top left).

  7. Graph the relation: {(0, -2) (1, 2), (0, 1), (3, 4) and (2, 1)}.

  8. Domain and range • Domain (D) is the set of all x-values (the 1st number in the ordered pair) • Range (R) is the set of all y-values (the 2nd number in the ordered pair) • State the Domain and Range of the relation {(0, -2) (1, 2), (0, 1), (3, 4) and (2, 1)} • Domain: D = {0, 1, 2, 3} • Range: R = {-2, 2, 1, 4}
