  4. 2002, ETIS starts • From 2002 up to 2005 development of the pilot for ETIS European Transport policy Information System (ETIS-BASE, ETIS-LINK, ETIS-AGENT) • The result of a wide concertation between experts, Member States, Commission, their support has been crucial

Key Principles Established • Database for Transport Policy • Generic database for modellers. • Objectively complete. • Broad Geographical Scope • With specific attention on accession region. • Observed Data • Favoured over estimated/modelled data. • Data Model • Data should be self explanatory. • Sustainable Business Model. • One stop shop for European transport data.

Key Design Elements • Data model “inspired by” Eurostat. • Sound basis for updating. • Main EC reference data. • Data collections. • Each collection conforming to data model. • Online access to data. • Already active. • Data community – check in check out. • Mechanism for defining and refining content. • Documents, tables, maps. • Integrated knowledge base.

The relationship to EUROSTAT • ETIS does not replace EUROSTAT but builds on its work • There was a close cooperation between ETIS project partners and EUROSTAT • The objectives of building an ETIS like tool were not realisable within EUROSTAT • ETIS includes data not included in the EUTOSTAT data sets (more data from national data providers, or data from other data providers)

  8. Cooperation with other projects and organizations • Close cooperation with other projects and organizations required: • Optimize the integration of ETIS into the existing environment • Build up on existing experiences • Take into account diverging needs and expectations
