What pests would i see l.jpg

What pests would I see?

  • Raccoons – they will often walk on people’s roofs. And they leave their ‘calling card’ behind, which can make the house stink. So we keep trees and bushes trimmed from the house so they don’t have access.

  • Squirrels -they want to find a warm place in winter. So they will find the narrowest of openings to get into your attic. They use your house’s insulation to build their own nests. If they had the chance, they would demand a seat at your table for Thanksgiving dinner! Be careful that your house is sealed so they can’t get in.

  • Slugs in the garden – they are terrible! They eat everything. We use organic poison – and some people swear by putting out a bowl of beer! The slugs crawl in and drown.

What pests would I see?

  • Rats and mice can be damaging to homes also. Traps and poison are used.

  • termites may be the worst of all! They eat the wood and destroy the wooden beams at the foundation. Poison is used to control termites as well.

  • Ants can be very damaging to the many wooden houses in the Seattle area. Often, they start eating the wooden beams at the foundation of a house, and the owner doesn’t notice until it’s too late. It can be very expensive to fix. Ant poison is often used.

Think beyond the animal kingdom l.jpg

Think beyond the Animal Kingdom

  • E coli – this is a dangerous bacterium that exists in animal droppings and is a big threat when it gets into the food supply. We had a terrible outbreak fifteen years ago when the Jack in the Box fast food chain had contaminated meat and undercooked it as well. So the bacteria survived, infected a number of individuals, and four children died and hundreds were injured.

Think beyond the Animal Kingdom

  • Nettles – the stinging nettle is an unpleasant plant that hurts you when you touch the underside of the leaves and it can leave a nasty rash that might hurt and itch for days.

  • Oregon grape – very common in the Northwest - it looks like holly and has blue berries with beautiful yellow flowers in the springtime

Think beyond the Animal Kingdom

  • Red algae – in the protist group, red algae are not our friends here! When they bloom they create a toxic “red tide” which poisons shellfish and ruins the harvest.

  • Vine maple – a gently beautiful maple common to the Pacific Northwest
