What are the literacy expectations of the Common Core? • Text Complexity: Regular practice with complex text and its academic language. • Evidence: Reading and writing grounded in evidencefrom texts, both literary and informational. • Content-rich Nonfiction: Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction.   2. Think Aloud: Why? • Reveals the reading process of expert readers • Makes an invisible skill transparent, which is especially important for struggling readers • Models how you want students to annotate in your content area

  3. Think Aloud: What and how? • Find a short text in your content area. Make copies for the students to follow along and mark. • Project the text on the overhead or document camera…you need to be able to mark up the text. • Read it aloud and talk through your connections, questions, frustrations as you go. • That’s it! The logical next step, is to have students try it with a similar text either independently or in small groups. • HINT: You can use the strategy with a text you have prepped beforehand or a cold reading.
