Early Years • Born May 11th, 1904 in Figueras, Spain. • He had a younger sister whom his parents spoiled. • As a toddler, he wanted to be a cook • Started painting at age 6 and fell in love with it • His parents sent him to live with their family friend and artist Pitchot. • Dali has a distinct and creative imagination as a child, this inspired many paintings

Childhood • Dali’s goal was to be unique and put his own mark on the world. • His uniqueness led to violence and cruelty toward his friends. • He enjoyed pain and was a mad and tormented child • Dali loved pain and got pleasure by feeling it • Dali would stand on his head for a long period of time to make him hallucinate • This outlandish childhood is symbolized in his paintings.

Inspiration • Dali was inspired by his friends Picasso and Freud • Freud’s discoveries and theories of the time influenced his paintings • Freud was attempting to explain dreams and unconscious desires at the time • Picasso’s inspiration came early in Dali’s career when he tried impressionism and cubism

  5. Surrealism • Originated in Paris in 1924 • Use a lot of deep symbolism in their art • Paintings of things as if you were on drugs • The surrealist movement ended with the start of World War II • Following this most surrealist artist left Europe for America

  11. Later years • Dali left the surrealist movement in 1931 • Some believe his praise of Hitler led to the surrealist kicking him out • He continued to be a well known artist without actively participating in this group • Last paintings date from 1983 • Died on January 23rd, 1989
