  1. Captain Pollard: “…a small man with a tendency toward stoutness”(Philbrick 31). Pollard is a very self-doubting man, instead of making his own decisions as a captain should, “Pollard paused to consider their arguments” (Philbrick 45). Pollard is a dynamic character. • 1stMate Chase: “At five feet ten, Chase was tall for the early nineteenth century… but Chase felt he has already mastered everything he needed to know to perform Pollard’s job ”(Philbrick 31). Chase is a dynamic character. • Thomas Nickerson: “Nickerson was the youngest of the group” (Philbrick 2). He is an off- islander, which to all the elders, makes him a misfit. While on the boat, Thomas resigns himself to death, but his Captain makes him live. He is a dynamic character.

  2. Owen Coffin: He is a young boy and Captain Pollard’s cousin, who steered his three friends to join the ship’s crew. Coffin is a dynamic character, he gave up his life for the greater good of the crew. • William Bond: Bond is an off- island black man, who signs up for the crew as a green-hand. He is a protagonist; “As the belowdecks creaked and gurgled, the black steward … on his own initiative, returned several times to the rapidly filling aft cabins to receive… the navigational equipment” (Philbrick 84). Without the equipment, the crew would have been with no means of salvation. • The Whale: The great sperm whale is the antagonist of the narrative. The “eighty- ton bull”(Philbrick 82), shattered the ship and caused the ruin of the Essex’s crew.
