  • Something has got to change.

    • small schools must, by their vary nature, be different than their predecessors, and demands that we all make adjustments and provide the conditions for these changes

  • Small in and of itself does not make schools successful. It is what small allows:

    • More personalization and improved instruction

    • A strong focus on academics ; equal emphasis on relationships

    • Accountability/ownership for success or failure

    • Encourage stronger adult-adult, student-student, adult-student relationships

    • Close the achievement gap for all students

Slc policy

SLC Policy

  • Supt. Payzant instituted a policy: high schools to be structured into SLCs. The format was not clearly defined.

  • SY 03-04 HSR Work Group completed a study to assess how high schools were instituting the SLC policy.

    • There were SLCs, but no uniformity, no solid structures.

    • HSR Work Group made recommendations to the Supt. To change the SLC policy to mandate that all small schools be vertically aligned grade 9 – 12.

  • Supt. presented findings and made recommendation to the Boston School Committee. School Committee voted in favor of recommendation.
