  • Neutral atom in uniform el. Fielde- displaced: cancel the el. field at the nucleus

  • But! Nucleus is not point-like e.g. does not see uniform el. field of e- yet is not accelerated!

  • If nuclear charge =/= nuclear dipole-moment density distr  average force on nucleus =0 while EDM interaction =/=0

  • Schiff moment(=el dipole distr weighted by R^2) measure of this

  • Octupole deformed nuclei  enhanced Schiff moment
