  1. Measurement systems Measuring in Metric Units (1-5, pg 26) Customary system (3-6, pg 148)

  2. Metric Most used around the world Measurements are easy to convert because it is a decimal system Units Length: Meter Capacity: Liter Weight: gram Customary Mostly used in the united states Certain equivalencies are necessary to make conversions Units Length: Inch, foot, yard, mile Capacity: fl oz, cup, pint, quart, gallon Weight: Ounce, pound, ton Comparing the two

  3. Sample problems Find the following equivalencies • How many centimeters are on 3.4 decameters? • How many kilometers are in 345 mts? • How many mts are there on 45 mm?

  4. How to convert in the metric system Metric stairs

  5. How to convert in the metric system Using a table

  6. How to convert in the metric system Using the “rule of three” • Label columns • Be organized • Solve by cross multiplication

  7. How to convert in the Customary System

  8. How to convert in the customary system Using the “rule of three” • Label columns • Be organized • Solve by cross multiplication Sample problems • 5ft, 3 in to yd • 3 cups to pints • 3 cups to fl oz • 76 oz to lb • 5 lb to oz

  9. In class activity • Champion • The Amazon river is about 4,000 miles, how many feet is this? • I get it • Baby crocodiles are about 8 in when they hatch and they grow about ten inches each year, how many feet long are they when they are 4 years old? • Not very sure • You are hiking a 2 mile trail, when you have hiked 1000 ft, how many feet you have left?

  10. Conversions between Systems

  11. Practice • 5 mts to yards • 47 ft to mts • 3 miles to kms • 20 grams to oz • 82 kilograms to pounds • 30 liters to quarts and gallons

  12. Word Problem • There’s a debate between where is more expensive to buy gas, in Chicago or Mexico city. Today a gallon of gas is going for 3.44 usd. In Mexico the gas is going for 0.80 usd per liter.

  13. Word problem Find the dimensions in mts of what is given for a soccer field. • DimensionsThe overall dimensions of a regulation soccer field is 100 yards long and 60 yards wide. • Center CircleIn the center of the field a 10 yard circle marks the area where defenders must stay outside of at the start of a kickoff • Penalty AreaA rectangular box (sometimes called the "penalty box") centered on the goal marks the penalty area. This box is 44 yards wide by 18 yards deep. It includes an arc 10 yards from the "penalty mark". Fouls committed in this area may result in a penalty kick. • Penalty Mark The penalty mark inside the "penalty area" 12 yards from the end line. The penalty mark is where "penalty kicks" are placed. • Goal Area The goal area is a smaller rectangle inside the "penalty area", centered on the goal. The measurements of this box are 20 yards wide by 6 yards deep. This box marks the area from which a goal kick must be placed. • Corner KickA one yard quarter circle is marked on each corner of the field to mark where a player must place the ball prior to a corner kick. • The GoalThe adult soccer goal is 24 feet wide by 8 feet high.
