  1. idSpaceTooling and Training for collaborative distributed product innovation e-Learning Baltics 2009, Rostock Warnemünde June 17th 2009 Marjo Rutjens,Marlies Bitter-Rijpkema*Open University of the Netherlands CELSTECPer Pascal Grube, University of HildesheimThomas Heider, LINK MV

  2. Outline of the presentation • Introduction to idSpace • idSpace learning support for co-creativity • idSpace environment • Discussion

  3. Product innovations? Source: Ed Ashford, presentation by SAS Global

  4. Inventing new products is teamwork is a “ matter of learning”

  5. Supporting collaborative creativity IdSpace aims at an integrated creativity enhancing environment for distributed collaborative NPD teams

  6. Facts about the project • FP7 funded STREP, work programme ICT, Technology Enhanced Learning • 1,8 Mio € • 9 partners, 6 countries, 7 WPs • Started April 2008, ends March 2010 • URL: http://www.idspace-project.org

  7. idSpace partners Tooling of and training for collaborative, distributed product innovation

  8. Supporting collaboration for innovation http://share.skype.com/ Need for one collaborative creativity support environment

  9. Enhancing co-creativity Creative performance can be enhanced Augmentation of creative teamwork involves inventive thinking operations: exploration, combination, transformation of ideas, offinding new possibilities, seeing new perspectives, breaking existing patterns of reasoning and doing. Observation is that for this we need more than creativity support tools alone. Needed is learning integrated in overall performance support of co-creativity, fitting the professional ‘s NPDcontext andneeds.

  10. Barriers to co-creativity Problems with idea generation. Problems with knowledge communication. Awareness of existing knowledge. Lack of enabling instruments: lacking fluidity for incremental idea structuring. Breakdowns in product design  learning problems

  11. 4-P: co-creativity support Person P-(domain) expertise creative capabilities: thinking skills Motivation Product collective result: novel product materialization of ideas: artifacts (Fischer) Process knowledge creation organization of ideation process creative collaboration (re)use of existing knowledge expertise. Press (context) Organization- work context, (creative) culture, trust, idSpace-“memory”

  12. Customized advice Advices to create space for the acquisition of new perspectives to enhance collaborative meaning making to apply a specific creativity method to assess common ground to organize effective creative collaboration to cope with risk, failure and breakdown, …… No “cook book” (prescriptive) type of learning support. Supportive advice (context awareness) explicit request by participants (M or GM) automatically generated by the system (S)

  13. Design patterns (DP) Systematic description of a problem which occurs over and over again. It describes the core of the solution to that problem, in such a way that you can re-use this solution…, without ever doing it the same way twice" (Alexander et al., 1977). Design patterns express the accumulated knowledge to a specific problem and propose how this problem can be solved when someone deals with it.

  14. Example collaboration pattern Pyramid PHASE N: Propose a final and agreed solution PHASE i: Compare, discuss and propose a shared solution PHASE 1: Individual (or initial group) study of the problem. Proposes a solution Individual or initial group Teacher

  15. Patterns for learning + creativity Learning Theoretical concepts Pedagogical strategies Creativity Theoretical concepts Creativity techniques Design Patterns Collaborative Learning Flow Patterns (CLFP) Creativity Technique Flow Patterns (CreFP) • Creativity support advices • - user requested • - Automatic activation

  17. Advice composition using pattern characteristics

  18. Energy2Move case Geny Smart has been assigned to lead the innovation design team Energy2Move at M@eco with the objective to design new eco friendly mobile power cells for mobile phones. IdSpace helps the moderator Sam by structuring the sessions, supporting creative collaboration include existing knowledge, ….

  19. Advice ideation (example Energy2Move) M decides to choose the 5HW1 creativity method from the list of candidates for the Energy2Move type of problem. From the information offered he estimates that SCAMPER is too complex and time consuming for his project.Since his profile indicates that he never used 5HW1 the S presents an option to get a detailed introduction to the procedure and requirements of 5WH1.

  20. Pedagogical advice (example) Example of integration of advice in Ideatrigger

  22. IdSpace platform (Pascal) • Process overview • Samples • Innovative features • Creativity Technique Selector

  23. Main Process Start up Activities Shaping the Project -3a- Create Project -4- Select Pedagogic Scenario -5- Compose Groups -1- Provide User Info -2- Share Profile -6- Choose Creativity Technique -3b- Select Project -7- Create Problem Statement Creativity Process -11- Cluster Individual Ideas -10- Individually Generate Ideas -9- Set SMART Goals -8- Create Common Ground -12- Collaborately Generate Ideas Closure -13- Evaluate the Ideas -14- Formulate Solution -15- Publish Created Knowledge -16- Close Project

  24. Innovative features • Semantics (for information Model) • ISO Topic Maps technology, knowledge integration standard • Connecting all parts in one seamless knowledge map • It’s all about finding and sharing information & knowledge • Context Awareness • Suggestions by the platform • Group members - based on user profiles • Resources - based on knowledge domain • Creativity techniques - based on group skills & experience • Creativity Techniques Library • Set of creativity techniques available • Statement based techniques • Freedom to manoeuvre for the moderator

  25. Creativity Matrix Tool • This tool is a creativity technique selector. • It uses contextual data/criteria as input and presents the techniques which match those criteria. http://repository.sse.uni-hildesheim.de/CreativityTechniqueSelector/
