  1. Saving Darfur: You Either Act, or Stand By! SWBAT: Write a letter to Congressmen Cohen about the situation in Darfur.

  2. How will we be helping? • We will be writing a series of letters to government officials to voice our appreciation and to ask them to do more. • Our first letter will be to our congressman of Shelby County Steve Cohen.

  3. How does Congressman Cohen stand on the issues in Darfur? • If Ms. Landy had to grade Congressman Cohen on how much he cares about Darfur and cares to pass laws to help I would give him… An A+

  4. Here are some of hisgreat things he’s done for Darfur and Sudan: • He has supported: • Co-sponsored and voted for the Darfur accountability and Divestment Act- • Authorizes state and local divestment from companies doing business with the genocidal government of Sudan. (companies can no longer invest money or give money to Sudan) • Voted for the China Resolution- • The bill calls on the Government of the People's Republic of China to use its unique influence and economic leverage to stop genocide and violence in Darfur, Sudan. (This asks China to stop supporting Sudan and to start using their influence to help Sudan end the genocide, for example: not buying oil until they stop the genocide!) • The bill was passed by the House in a 410-0 vote on June 5, 2007. • Voted for Genocide Accountability Act- • Although the bill never passed, it made a very important statement in congress. • The Darfur Genocide Accountability Act called for targeted sanctions (or fines) against Sudanese government officials, allowed the U.S. president to use force to stop the genocide, and denied ships to go to Sudan engaged in business and not be able to purchase oil.

  5. Today you are going to write Congressman Cohen a thank you letter, that WILL BE MAILED! • Log onto my weebly website (under class sites), and view my example letter. Your teacher will read through it with you. • Then you will open a word document and start following the instructions in my sample letter. • Remember each paragraph must be 5-7 sentences, I promise you I will be sending these! The letter must LOOK exactly like my example, so you may need to change the alignment of the text • DO NOT CHANGE THE FONT OR SIZE • Lastly, save your work as Lastname.60#.LetterCohen • If you finish early please peer edit another scholar’s letter who is also done! They need to be perfect!
