  1. Religion of Our Own Eyes In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes. (Judges 17:6).

  2. Religion of Micah • Stole 1100 shekels of silver from mother • Returned money after hearing of curse • Mother wholly dedicated silver for images • Carved & molded images • Mother gave 200 shekels for images • Micah’s Religion • Shrine, Ephod, Household Idols • Anointed son as priest • Felt extra blessed when Levite showed up

  3. When Setting Up A New Religion • Must reject God to set up new religion! They forsook the LORD and served Baal and the Ashtoreths. (Judges 2:13). And the LORD said to Samuel, Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them. (1 Samuel 8:7).

  4. When Setting Up A New Religion • Don’t expect God to accept that which is an abomination in His sight! You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me. (Exodus 20:3-5).

  5. Change Forbidden Now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the judgments which I teach you to observe, that you may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers is giving you. You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at Baal Peor; for the LORD your God has destroyed from among you all the men who followed Baal of Peor. But you who held fast to the LORD your God are alive today, every one of you. Surely I have taught you statutes and judgments, just as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should act according to them in the land which you go to possess. (Deut. 4:1-5).

  6. When Setting Up A New Religion • Man does not possess the ability to set up an acceptable religion! O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps. (Jer. 10:23). There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. (Prov. 14:12).

  7. When Setting Up A New Religion • Must reject God to set up new religion! • Don’t expect God to accept that which is an abomination in His sight! • Man does not possess the ability to set up an acceptable religion!

  8. God: Perfect King With A Perfect Law • Revealed right and wrong • Revealed perfect way to deal with crime • Protect the just from the unjust • People taught how to arbitrate differences • God would protect and defend the nation • Revealed acceptable worship • Perfect combination of civil and spiritual law • No inconsistent laws or biased laws • Morality taught by spiritual law upheld by civil law Israel Rejected!

  9. Why Did Israel Reject God? When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the LORD nor the work which He had done for Israel. (Jud. 2:10). My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. (Hosea 4:6). Lack of Knowledge

  10. Ignorance Leads to Disobedience Then the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and He said, “Because this nation has transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not heeded My voice, I also will no longer drive out before them any of the nations which Joshua left when he died…” (Judges 2:20-21). Thus the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their gods. So the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God, and served the Baals and Asherahs. (Judges 3:5-7).

  11. Ignorance Leads to Disobedience When the LORD your God brings you into the land which you go to possess, and has cast out many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you, and when the LORD your God delivers them over to you, you shall conquer them and utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them. Nor shall you make marriages with them. You shall not give your daughter to their son, nor take their daughter for your son. For they will turn your sons away from following Me, to serve other gods; so the anger of the LORD will be aroused against you and destroy you suddenly. (Deut. 7:1-4).

  12. Why Did Israel Reject God? • Israel became comfortable among the wicked! • Mixed marriages • Children raised in mixed households often do not learn vital lessons: • One True God! • Only One Right Way To Serve Him! • Idolatry Is Evil! • Today: • One True Church - Gospel Plan of Salvation • Only One Right Way To Worship • Denominations Are Evil

  13. Filled Their Need To Worship • Allowed Them To Commit Sin: • Stealing • Abortion (sacrificed children to Molech) • Adultery, Fornication, Rape • Take advantage of poor, aged, and weak • Cheat employees or employer • Worship at your convenience • Least in flock for sacrifice • Whatever is right in the eyes of man Why Idolatry

  14. Doing What’s Right in the Eyes of the Worshipper! Ask your favorite idol what is right and wrong: Idolatry • Is it okay to worship other gods? • Is it okay to have an abortion? • Is divorce & remarriage for any cause okay? • Are some lies alright? • Is homosexuality an acceptable lifestyle? • Ask about gambling, drinking, lusting, etc. God Rejects!

  15. Denominationalism A Form of Idolatry Promote, Allow, or Tolerate Many Sins: • Drinking of Alcoholic Beverages • Lascivious Behavior: Dancing, Immodesty • Divorce & Remarriage for any cause • Homosexuality • Covetousness: Bingo, Raffles, Gambling • Unfaithful Attendance • Women Preachers, Priests, Bishops, etc. • Lawlessness in Worship: Instruments, Entertainment, Incense…

  16. Denominationalism Doing what’s right in the eyes of the worshipper Ask a denominational church what is right and wrong: • Is it okay to worship in any church? • Is it okay to have an abortion? • Is divorce & remarriage for any cause okay? • Are some lies alright? • Is homosexuality an acceptable lifestyle? • Ask about gambling, drinking, lusting, etc. God Rejects!

  17. Man-Made Religion is Attractive • Serve when convenient: • After recreation, career, television, family • Vacation, School, sports not get in the way • Give leftovers to the Denomination—they’ll accept! • Right or Wrong determined by the situation • Eliminate guilt: Blame others for your sin • God won’t condemn many in the Judgment – people are just sick, not sinful! Saturday Xmas Easter Short, casual service

  18. Acceptable Religion • Worship (Jn. 4:24) • Attendance (Heb. 10:25) • Drunkenness (1 Pet. 4:3) • Marriage (Matt. 19:9) • Stealing (Eph. 4:28) • Fellowship (2 Jn. 9-11) • Homosexuality (Rom. 1:27) • Lasciviousness (Gal. 5:19-21) • Covetousness (Col. 3:5) God…has in these last days spoken to us by His Son (Heb. 1:1-2). He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him--the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. (John 12:48).

  19. Service God Accepts I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:1-2). If his offering is a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish; he shall offer it of his own free will at the door of the tabernacle of meeting before the LORD. (Leviticus 1:3).
