  1. JISC Consultation e-Science in Education – Models for Future Thinking The Policy Context Diana Laurillard E-Learning Strategy Unit

  2. The 5-year Strategy for Education and Skills sets the context for using ICT to transform educational and childrens’ services Challenges Principles of reform - to reverse the disadvantage that begins in early years - to achieve excellence for all schools in achievement and behaviour - to ensure that every school leaver is prepared for the world of work - to raise the skill level of our working population - to offer access to university for all with the potential to benefit - Greater personalisation and choice - Opening up services to new providers - Freedom and independence for heads - Major commitment to staff development - Partnerships with parents, employers, to maximise life chances

  3. ‘14-19’ in the 5-year strategy for Education and Skills Greater breadth in the curriculum at AS and A level Modernisation of the exam system Stretch and challenge young people to identify the brightest More imaginative range of courses, focused on their specialism

  4. ‘Success for All’ – Strategy for reforming FE • Science one of 4 priority curriculum areas • ‘Science Expert Group’ for Standards Unit • Aim is ‘to make the study of science more exciting and attractive’: • Planning for variety – teachers to focus on adding interest, excitement and challenge • Promoting discussion – encouraging learners to articulate their ideas and reveal misconceptions • Gaining from technology – encouraging teachers and trainers to reflect on the use of technology and its benefits for teaching and learning

  5. HE and the 5-year strategy for Education and Skills ‘support the Government’s overall strategy of developing sustainability and excellence of UK science and research base’ ‘increasing value in research collaboration between institutions, departments and research teams’

  6. Unified e-learning strategy Integrating e-systems across schools – colleges – universities enables cross-sector collaboration Cross-sector collaboration could extend the role of digital libraries into research and teaching beyond universities The role of digital libraries becomes critical to teaching and learning in e-Science and in e-Research

  7. The unified approach seeks to make ‘personalisation’ affordable through economies of scale ~ • Teachers/trainers can share resources and build on each others’ work • Education and training providers can collaborate on choice and flexibility in curriculum and support services • It allows a ‘build once – use many times’ approach • Aggregated demand creates a more flourishing market • Learners/employees can have seamless transition and support across departments, institutions, and into other sectors
