  5. Pearl Harbor • Things America did know: • Japanese were Samurai Warring Philosophy • Attack was imminent

  6. December 6th, 1941 • Vice Admiral ChuichiNagumo left Japan • 6 air craft carriers • En route to PH • US Intelligence interception • 10% of a message • US commander: “I’ll get back to you on Monday.”

  7. December 7th, 1941 • Private Joseph Lockard • Giant Mass on radar screen • Commander • US planes on their way in • Flock of birds!

  8. 8 AM, December 7th, 1941 • TORA,TORA,TORA! • Pilot MitsuoFuchida battle cry • Complete surprise • Assault on Battleship Row begins

  9. “We’re Under Attack!” • 366 Japanese Planes • Assault 1 • 168 Planes • Assault 2 • Japan lost 29 Planes total • Attack took 1 hour, 1 minute

  10. The Effects • 4 Battleships • Arizona • California • West Virginia • Oklahoma

  11. Hickam Field • Planes parked wingtip to wingtip • Preventative attack • Air attack was unlikely • Lost 188 planes • 159 Damaged

  12. The Aftermath • American Losses: • 2,400 dead • ½ of the USS Arizona • Japanese Losses • 129 dead • 5 midget subs lost • 4 midget subs relocated
