  1. Original Ideas • Create a class revolving around social justice issues, specifically human trafficking in partnership with International Justice Mission • Too much red tape/bureaucracy; low success rate • Possibly film a documentary while assisting a human trafficking organization, both in Houston and abroad • Lack of equipment and funds; lack of contacts; better use of funds • Find an organization to raise funds for/volunteer with • Again, better use of funds; lack of time to travel abroad • Settled on simply raising funds for a worthwhile organization…

  2. Background: The Tirrim Project • Created in 1981 to translate Biblical scriptures into Rendille • 88% of New Testament Translated • Helped provide humanitarian aid to locals • Runs Tirrim Primary • Runs classes for both Rendille youth and adults in two schools

The Rendille • Nomadic tribe of about 40,000 in northern Kenya • They are very poor and most are uneducated • They are pastoralists - they herd camels, sheep, and goats. • Although Kenya has two national languages - Swahili and English - most Rendille speak neither because they are uneducated...not by choice, but because there is simply not access to affordable schools. • A quote from my friend, Jamie: “Secondary (high) school in Kenya is not free and a privilege to attend - if you can afford it. School in Kenya is year-round - three terms of school that are 12 weeks long, with 4 weeks off in between - and most schools cost hundreds of dollars a term just to attend. Then, if you can afford to actually go, most schools in north Kenya are a complete joke - teachers show up drunk, students don't have access to textbooks or materials, and most can't afford to go more than a few terms before they run out of money anyway.”

  4. Tirrim Schools • 5 nursery school classes, two primary schools, and a secondary school up to Form 3 • Best school in district for three years since gov’t writing exam began • Tirrim Secondary School was founded in January 2009 through Africa Inland Church (the church that AIM has been establishing in Africa since the 1890's). They began with one class (Form 1 - 9th grade equivalent) and added Form 2 this last year. Each grade has 32 students in it. TSS is the first secondary school built for the Rendille, and they are one of the last tribes in Kenya to receive access to a secondary education. The cost to attend TSS each term is no more than $15 per person, and that includes room, all meals, and all school supplies • TSS currently meets in an old house - each classroom is so crammed full that two students actually share a desk in the closet of each classroom.

  5. Objectives • Raise $1,000 for the Tirrim Project via various fundraisers • Raise awareness for the Tirrim Project • Raise awareness for global education issues, especially in rural Africa

  6. Ideas • T-shirt contest/t-shirt sales • Main fundraiser • Coffeehouse profit share/concert • Awareness campaigns • Parent’s Weekend • Kyle Field Day with MSC FISH • Donations accepted along the way

  7. Budget • Funds needed: $875 • Will purchase 125 shirts • If all 125 are sold, $1,000 of profit will be made • We utilized our free prints on campus for any necessary fliers or paperwork • Profit share and awareness campaigns required no costs

Timeline • T-shirt design contest January – February 2011 • Finalize t-shirt design March 11, 2011 • T-shirt sales April – August 2011 • Parent’s Weekend April 16, 2011 • Kyle Field Day April 30, 2011 • Muldoon’s Profit Share/concert May 3, 2011 • Total donations and send to August 2011Tirrim Project in Korr

  9. Korr Curriculum Shirt Contest • Started as Facebook event • 1900 invites/guests • Started awareness and increased excitement for our upcoming fundraisers • Several designs submitted

  10. T-shirt Sales • Started later than anticipated • Due to lack of upfront funds, have decided to pre-sale shirts for first round • In two weeks we have pre-sold ¼ of our intended sales goal • First round of shirts will be produced and distributed by May 5, 2011

  11. Awareness Campaigns • Parent’s Weekend • Had difficulties for approval and fell through • Kyle Field Day • Coming up next weekend • Muldoon’s Profit Share • Once we solidify our guest musician, we will solidify our date with Muldoon’s • Right now set for May 3, 2011

  12. Challenges • Having excessively large goals • Not a bad characteristic, but definitely not realistic for our timeframe • Budget constraints • Generating enthusiasm • Securing commitment • Time management
