  2. The Innovation Competition • Background • Wider Context • Code fests / hackfest / … • Mashup competitions • Local Context • “JISC should sponsor competitions to explore what can be achieved with lightweight solutions, and not just proposals for 2 year funding.” • (Let’s) Just Do It!: • Let’s encourage the community to try it • Build on successes of the Museum Mashup day • Let’s learn from experiences - and see how to build on the experiences Innovation Competition

  3. The Competition Criteria • Three key aspects: • User-focussed: The benefits to users i.e. what users will gain from using this innovation. • Ease: How the innovation was created and the ease of creating it (lightweight solutions preferred). • “Cool”: What makes this innovation cooler than the rest!! Does it make you say “I wish I’d thought of that!”, “Wow, so simple, yet so powerful” or “We’ll have to do that when we get back”. Innovation Competition Note for managers: Techies, who seek to conserve bandwidth use ‘cool’ (4 Bytes) rather than “development of user focussed solutions which maximise use of scarce resources” (77 Bytes)

  4. D The Competition • What have we got? • Google map displays • Google maps mashups (location plus something else) • Simile Timelines • YouTube mashup • Fun stuff • And, possibly, stuff developed during the workshop. Innovation Competition Let’s explore the submissions we have received

  5. What Next for The Competition? • Aims of the Competition: • Opportunity to experiment • Friendly environment • Professional development • Have some fun • Questions: • Did it work? • Should we do more (a dedicated mashup day, perhaps?) • Is it sustainable? • Now you know what it’s about, will you enter next year? Innovation Competition

  6. Reflections (1) • What shall I say? • What if York was flooded? • The need for contingency plans for IWMW events (and more widely): • Mobile phone nos. • … • Building a toolkit for future IWMW (& other) events: • Structured data (e.g. locations) • … Reflections On IWMW 2007

  7. Reflections (2) • The Content: • Technical level (more / less / about right) • Management issues (more / less / about right) • Users issues (more / less / about right) • What else? What have we missed? • The Structure: • Plenaries / workshops / discussion groups / …(more / less / about right) • What else? What have we missed? • The Community: • Emphasis on communities & community building:(more / less / about right) Reflections On IWMW 2007
