  5. Solar Eclipse • Occurs when the moon passes directly in front of the Earth. • The moon’s shadow falls upon part of the Earth • Areas in the shadow’s umbra see a total solar eclipse, areas in the penumbra see a partial solar eclipse • Solar eclipses only occur during new moon phase

  7. Solar Eclipse • Even though the sun is much larger than the moon, they appear to be exactly the same size in the sky because the moon is so much closer • The chromosphere and corona are only visible during a solar eclipse

  8. Annular Eclipse • Because the moon’s orbit is not circular it is not always the same distance from the sun • If the moon is farther away during an eclipse, it will be too small to cover the entire moon

  11. Lunar Eclipse • Occurs when the moon passes into the shadow of the Earth • Lunar eclipses are much more common because the Earth’s shadow is much larger than the moon • Only occurs during a full moon phase
