  2. Renewing your U.S. passport in advance is not only convenient, but also suggested by the U.S. Department of State, which proposes renewing as a minimum nine months previous to cessation. If your passport expires within six months, airlines could decline to permit you to go aboard, and a few countries will decline entrance. Normal renewal applications are processed within four to six weeks, even though an expedited choice is available that normally takes two to three weeks. Here we point out a few tips regarding the passport renewal process.

  3. Tip 1: Finish the renewal process by mail if your passport is unharmed, was issued on or after your 16th birthday, your legal name has not altered, or if you have a marriage certificate or issued court order confirming a legal name alteration.

  4. Tip 2: Finish Form DS-82: Application for a U.S. Passport by Mail. You can get the application form at a post office. Use only black ink and abide by the directions cautiously.

  5. Tip 3: Attain new passport photos to dispatch with the application form. Make sure that the photos are 2-by-2 inches, have a clear focus, good lighting and a white background.

  6. Tip 4: Use secure packaging envelope to send your documents. Place the completed DS-82 with attached passport photo, passport fees and additional passport photo in the envelope. Do not fold over the application or photos.

  7. Tip 5: Incorporate a copy of your court order or marriage certificate if your name has altered since your last passport application. Make sure that the new name is evidently listed on the documents or the application will be rejected.

  8. Tip 6: Make all payments to the U.S. Department of State by check or money order.

  9. Tip 7: Post the documents using a recognizable way of delivery, such as Express Mail.

  10. Tip 8: Send a separate check or money in the amount of $60 for expedited processing. Denote on the outside of the envelope evidently with “EXPEDITE” using a black marker.

  11. Tip 9: Arrange a meeting with a local passport agency if your passport is spoiled, you have an undocumented name alteration or if you are renewing a passport that was issued when you were 15 or younger.

  12. Tip 10: Take your passport, two new passport photos and applicable fees to the meeting. Take a check or money, as not all local passport agencies accept cash. Make all payments payable to the U.S. Department of State.
