  1. Order of Operations What does the Order of Operations have to do with traffic jams and accidents?

  2. What happens when there is an accident on the road that causes a huge traffic jam?

  3. YOU CLEAN UP THE MESS!!!

  4. What happens to the traffic? • It stops…… • Then it goes….. • Then it stops…… • Then it goes….

  5. If you think about it………. • All traffic starts in a big jumbled mess, and winds up travelling through one lane, kind of following a triangle shape! YAY

  6. If you think about it again….. • Order of Operations problems also start in a big jumbled mess. • You have to stop, fix things, then go. • Then you have to stop, fix things, then go. • And repeat. • And repeat. • Until you’re out of the traffic jam (YAY).

  7. But what do you clean up first?(YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS) • Parentheses () • Exponents • Multiplication or Division • Addition or Subtraction

  8. Let’s clean up a mess……. 20 ÷ (3 + 7) - 7

  9. And another mess……. 62 – 3 ● 18 - 4

  10. Starting to look like your locker……. 16 ÷ 4 + 8 ● 3 - 4

  11. Starting to look like your room……. 32 + (9 – 2) ● 2 ÷ 7

  12. 14 + 5 ● 10 11 – 12 ÷ 4

  13. 12 – 2 ÷ (2 + 8) ● 4

  14. 36 – 12 ÷ 3 ● 6 – 40 + 62
