  2. Objectives DT – Pupils should investigate textile products to inform their own designing and making of a 3D item. PFE – Pupils learn that resources can be allocated in different ways and these economic choices affect individuals, communities and the environment. Pupils learn about simple financial decisions involving small amount of money and consider making contributions to charity. In this unit children learn how textiles can be designed and made by: • Reducing – minimising waste, maximising the use of environmentally friendly textiles, reducing textiles which are damaging to the environment; Reusing – designing textiles products with more than one use and for future users; Recycling – discussing which textiles can be recycled after the product has been used and incorporating recyclable textiles into their products.

  3. TASK – Pupils will design ‘fashion’ which promotes the 3R’s, incorporating logo’s of their own design & using identified DT textile skills. They will use recycled textiles for their fashion & gain an understanding of the issues relating to textile waste. The children will hold a fashion show to raise awareness and money for our nominated school charity. This unit of work also has cross curricular links with education for sustainable development (ESD) and literacy.

  4. PFE Objectives • Balance needs & wants – prioritise what gets first call on a limited supply of money. We found out that clothing is a basic NEED but fashionable clothing is NOT! We realised that we buy MORE clothing than we need, which means that spending on other things is reduced.

  5. EXPLORING THE COST OF LOST PROPERTY

  6. PFE OBJECTIVES • Be able to assess best buys in a variety of circumstances: S&L TASK – Is the cheapest T-Shirt always the BEST BUY? This generated discussions relating to prices at Primark V Designer Fashion price tags? This led to an understanding that there is an ETHICAL dimension to our financial decision making.

  7. WASTE TEXTILES • By exploring our motives for buying fashionable clothing & gaining an understanding that we are generating too much textile waste, we researched what could be done with our unwanted clothing.

  8. Where does unwanted clothing go? We researched what could be done with unwanted clothing and what happened to it. This collection bin was found in Hong Kong!

  9. The children researched textile waste and produced posters focusing on the 3 R’s – RECYCLE, REDUCE & REUSE

  10. RECYCLED FASHION The challenge was for the children to recycle textile waste and, using identified DT skills, make an item of clothing which could be worn at a Fashion Show. The children had to trade items with each other in order to customise their clothing – nothing could be bought.

  11. THE SCHOOL BUDGET We looked at the School Budget, the children gained an understanding that each curriculum area is given a CREDIT budget at the start of the academic year. This budget has to be carefully managed so that it does not get into DEBT – our project was saving the DT budget money. Our normal textile project would have cost around £60.00 per class.

  12. FASHION DESIGNING We collected unwanted clothing & choose garments to alter and customise. Part of the design brief was to incorporate a 3 R’s Logo. We made paper patterns from precise measurements.

  17. RECYCLING AWARENESS WEEK Selby Council’s Recycling Officer came to talk to our school about recycling. Year 6 pupils showed the work we had been doing in class.

  21. L.O. Pupils learn about simple financial decisions involving small amount of money and consider making contributions to charity. To all Parents/Carers of Y6 Pupils You are invited to a Charity Fashion Show and Y6 Leavers' BBQ on Monday 21st July 2008 at 4.00 p.m. Tickets are available from Mrs Seekings at a cost £1.00 All proceeds will go to the RSPCA - Our school nominated charity.
