  13. Plot - a series of related events that make up a story or drama. It is made up of FIVE parts: • Exposition – the introduction of a story where the characters and setting is introduced • Rising-Action – the main character encounters minor problems and the reader gets to know him/her • Climax – the most suspenseful part of the story • Falling-Action – the reader finds out what happens to the main character • Resolution – all the loose ends in the story are wrapped up

  19. Main Idea Also called topic, big idea or picture

  20. Definition • the central point the author tries to make. • main idea lets the reader know what the rest of the paragraph will be about. • main idea can be an opinion, argument or a general idea. • most of the time the main idea is in the topic sentence, near the beginning. • main idea sets the tone, voice, and style.

  21. Supporting Details • supporting details are specific statements about the same topic. • supporting details describe and support the main idea. • supporting details explain/prove the author’s point. • supporting details are clear, organized details.

  22. Summary definition • A summary is the main idea, plus only one or two details. • The summary is the “essence” or what the whole article is about. • Summaries are always brief, short cut versions of the whole article, book, or movie. • A summary is not a retelling.

  30. Pronouns – Basic Definition • Pronoun- A word used in place of one or more nouns or pronouns. • Ex: When Mrs. Frantz came into class,shewas holding the biggest cup of hot chocolate I have ever seen. • Ex: The driveway and sidewalks are covered with snow;they should be shoveled.

  32. Pronoun Cont. • Antecedent- The word or word group that a pronoun stands FOR. • Ex: The dog losthiscollar. • DOG is the antecedent of his. • Ex: Ashlyn, call your mother. • Ashlynis the antecedent of your.

  33. Pronoun Cont. • Sometimes the antecedent is not stated because the reader can understand the meaning of the sentence without it. For example: “Call your mother.”

  34. Pronoun Cont. • Pronouns must agree with the antecedent in number and gender. • Marie and Collin took their chairs with them to the game. • There are two antecedents, so the pronoun must be plural • Ex: Janessa was wearing her coat at the mall. • Janessa is a girl, so the pronoun must be feminine.

Row Leader (Mrs. Frantz will assign) – count the number of people in your row & get the blue grammar book off of the shelf for your row Copy down the following sentences in Exercise 5 p. 329 into your blue notebooks. # 2,3,4,5,9 2) Then, cross out the repeated word. 3) Write above the repeated word the pronoun that best replaces it.   38. Personal Pronouns A personal pronoun refers to: ~the one speaking (first person), ~the one spoken to (second person), ~ the one spoken about (third person).
