  4. BACKGROUND HAITI • 7.5 X 106 PEOPLE IN HAITI – 2004 • MEDIAN AGE 18, LIFE EXPECT. 50 • $300 US PER CAPITA PER YEAR • 98% DEFORESTED • 80% ABJECT POVERTY • WATER QUALITY, FLOODING • POLITICAL INSTABILITY

  5. HAS WATER SUPPLY • LES FORGES WATERSHED • SPRING BOX COLLECTION SYSTEM • APPROX. 2K OF STEEL WATER LINE • 75 GPM WATER SUPPLY FOR HOSPITAL AND CAMPUS • MULTIPLE WATER TAPS THROUGH THE WATERSHED TO SERVICE COMMUNITY

HAS Environmental Systems • September 1995 - Engineering employee identifies several areas of potential contamination and mismanagement of chemical wastes disposal • 10 page “white paper analysis is developed” and submitted to the board of directors suggesting that action is needed….Hettich Report

  8. HAS Environemental Systems • January1996 - HAS hires engineering consultant for environmental feasibility study • February 1996 - Onsite 2-week visit is made to evaluate existing systems and prepare report • preliminary handwritten evaluation is left with hospital administration

HAS Environmental Systems • May 1996 - Feasibility study completed with conceptual evaluation and definition of specific problems, priority rankings, decision matrix, and preliminary cost estimates…..Berdanier Report • Dollar values are developed for materials based on US$ for current projects. Equipment and Man hours are estimated.

HAS Environmental Systems • June 1997 - Owner completes economic analysis , cost/benefit analysis, and identifies partial funding source (Swiss Government International Assistance) • June 1997 - Owner authorizes further study with more detailed cost estimates and tentatively plans to go ahead with project contingent on developing funding package

HAS Environmental Systems • July 1997- Owner hires engineering consultant to finish detailed proposal, cost estimates, etc. • Swiss Govt. and HAS request international expert on hospitals in developing, tropical countries to assist consultant in developing cost • August 1997 - consultant finishes detailed proposal, cost estimates and project prioritization construction…Berdanier/Beck

HAS Environmental Systems • September 1997 - Owner begins finalizing funding package • June - 1998 - Authorization for final design • September 1998 – Initiate Construction • June 2000 Construction Completion • June 2003 Feasibility study for Hospital Addition • June 2003 Wastewater Treatment Expansion
