  10. San Benito Menni (1841 – 1914) Italian priest, founder of the Congregation Hermanas del Hospital Sacred Heart of Jesus (beatified in 1984 and canonized in 1999)

  11. Benito Menni was a Roman Catholic priest belonging to the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God, born in Milan (Italy) in 1841. In 1867 he came to Spain to restore his Order of which very little was left by the middle of the century as a result of social and political upheavals. From 1881 to 1903, Menni carried out his restoration, setting up fourteen psychiatric hospitals. He also founded the Congregation of the Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, intended to care for mentally impaired women. The work of Menni resulted in the first network of private asylums for the insane in Spain because of the lack of interest on the part of the Administration on mental health problems. Promoting their own establishments, the Religious Orders secured a care based upon the principles of Christian charity and medical advances. The success was due both to an adequate management of manpower an economic resources, and a policy of making agreements with Provincial Authorities to provide care for the poor mentally infirm.
