Marko Rupnik On the relationship between artist and stone, Rupnik said: “When we cut a stone, we must hear it, we must be tuned in it, avoiding to go down with force and imposing our will. An artwork is borning from a dialogue in which the artist collaborates with matter in a mutual help bringing out to light the deepest meaning. Imposing our will makes a bad service to art and deceives us in life. In the mosaic, the spaces between the figures should be treated with equal attention and creative force as the figures themselves. The figures are like words, they are such as speeches. The spaces role is creating the right condition by which we can take up these words. The eye glides over the stones colors and movements; so we may hear a beauty echo in the soul. And only the beauty – because love is realized – is capable to create the right attitude to listen and understand. “ Father Marko Ivan Rupnik is a Slovenian Jesuit (born November 28, 1954), based in Rome, whose mosaics adorn churches at Fatima and Lourdes, in Madrid, Rome or Milan, in Cluj-Napoca Romania as well as the Pope’s private chapel in Vatican.
