  2. Melbourne is the capital and most populous city in the state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia after Sydney (approximate population of four million).

  3. Melbourne is home to a wide range of religious faiths, the most widely held faith of which is Christian (58.9%) with a large Catholic population (28.3%)

  4. The Swanston Street and Flinders Street corner remains one of Melbourne's busiest intersections today, ensuring the Anglican Cathedral a place at the heart of city life

  5. On 22 January 1891 the Cathedral was consecrated, but the erection of the spires did not begin until 1926

  6. The decision to build on the site of the existing church was made because of its proximity to the railway and soon to be completed cable tramway service

  7. St Patrick's Cathedral is the mother church of the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne

  8. The Centenary of its official opening and Consecration was marked in 1997; however, the first Mass was celebrated on the site in February 1858 in a former partially completed church

  9. From its consecration in 1897 to its ultimate completion in 1939 by the erection of its triple spires, it provides a continued act of adoration in stone and offers a superb setting of liturgical worship for the people of the archdiocese

  11. The Cathedral’s highly regarded organ and exceptional acoustics ensure its popularity with leading musicians and choral groups
