  6. The Universe is EVERYTHING THAT EXISTS to our knowlege!    Moons, Planets, Stars, Galaxies, Italian  Beef Sandwiches. 14 Billion Years Old  The observable universe is 5*1023 miles wide. What is the Universe?

How did the universe begin? • Scientists used to think that the universe stays the same as time goes by.   •  In the 1920's, it was discovered that the universe is expanding. • As of now, the leading theory on the origin of the universe is the Big Bang Theory Einstein discussing the possibility of an expanding universe with Willem de Sitter (1932)

This expansion continues today.  The universe is presently 5.5*1023 miles across or 93 billion light years wide. • Light year: the distance light travels in a year.  Big Bang Theory (BBT) • BBT says the universe began as a hot, dense ball containing ALL of the matter and energy which presently exists. • 14 billion years ago, universe suddenly expanded rapidly. (a big bang) Andromeda Galaxy, 2.5 million light years from Earth

Big Rip  Phantom Dark Energy will tip all matter apart Big Crunch: Big Bang in reverse.  Did a Crunch precede Big Bang? Big Bounce: See Big Crunch Multi-verse collisions: Could have been several Big Bangs. How will it end?
