  2. How are your computer skills? A “digital divide” separates students who can use computers to complete their school work and those who find it difficult. Chapter 4

  3. A potential time waster Students without basic computer skills often spend more time struggling to use the computer to complete an assignment than they do completing the actual assignment. Chapter 4

  4. Internet skills are not enough Most of your courses require the use of Word, Excel and PowerPoint and specialized software such as CAD. So even if you can download, rip, message and blog you will need basic skills in office productivity software. Chapter 4

  5. How good are you? Rate yourself on the following basic skills. Chapter 4

  14. Online Learning Your school may offer some courses online. This approach has some benefits: • Flexible study hours • Self-paced – learn at your own speed • Can attend course even if off-campus • Develops independent learning skills Chapter 4

  15. Online Learning also means… This method of learning requires that you manage your time and your motivation. The key to success is setting and keeping deadlines. Do your work every week. Chapter 4

  16. Save and Backup • Back up all work on CD, memory stick or network • Make hard copies of work • Have alternate plan for meeting assignment deadlines if your computer crashes. Note: Many schools do not keep work stored on lab computers beyond a day because of virus concerns. Chapter 4

  18. Where is It? • Library catalogue • Use call number - a code that tells you exactly where to find information • Stacks - shelves of books • Recall - library contacts person to return a book Chapter 4

  19. WWW • Browser - Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator • Browser is a program to help you find information • URL (Uniform Resource Locator) identifies a unique location on the web • Web pages: document • Links: embedded addresses • Search engines: index Chapter 4
