Who is JetBlue Airways? • CEO: Dave Barger • Founded in 1999, inaugural flight from JFK to FLL on 2/11/2000 • Headquartered in Forest Hills, NY • Approximately 12,000 Crewmembers • Now serving 56 BlueCities with 3 more on the way • Approximately 2000 Pilots spread across 5 Crew Bases (BOS, FLL, LGB, JFK, MCO) • 2 Aircraft Types (Airbus 320, Embraer 190) • JD Power Award Winner for Low Cost Airline Customer Satisfaction from 2005-2008

Who is JetBlue University? • CLO: Mike Barger, Ph.D. • Also Sr. Vice President of Fleet Operations • Approximately 160 Crewmembers broken into 7 Colleges: • 5 colleges designed to serve operational customers (Flight, Inflight, Airports, Reservations, Technical Operations) • Organizational Effectiveness, which supports leadership development and strategic initiatives • Learning Technologies • 3 Major Training Centers (Orlando, Forest Hills, and Salt Lake City) • In the past year: • Over 13,000 Crewmembers trained • Over 100,000 sessions • Approximately 430 unique offerings

  4. Who is Learning Technologies? • 4 Teams: • Learning Solutions: course development, R&D, software / productivity training • Corporate Publications: Content Management • Assessment, Measurement, & Evaluation (AME) • Learning Systems • Led by Murry Christensen, Director of Learning Technologies

Who is Learning Systems ? • 4 Crewmembers • Responsible for support of: • ATMS and all interfaces • JBU Portal (e-learning delivery) • Testcraft (test engine) • Elluminate (virtual classroom) • Metrics that Matter (assessment software) • Flight training schedule • AQP FAA Data Review and Subject Matter Expertise • Automation, Integration, Consolidation, Simplification

What is the Advanced Qualification Program (AQP)? • Voluntary alternative to traditional Part 121 Training • Designed primarily to increase safety through improved training • Carrier-, rather than FAA-, driven performance objectives • Adaptive curriculum based on new techniques, technologies, and performance data collected from previous training Adapted from http://www.faa.gov/training_testing/training/aqp/

  7. What is the AQP Data Management System (DMS)? • Tracks pilot and instructor performance data • Used for monthly reporting to FAA • Used to gather summary information for Annual FAA report • Most importantly….used to continually improve our training program!

  8. What are the data collection requirements? • Minimum requirements set forth in Chapter 8 of FAA Advisory Circular No 120-54A • Ability to update every 12 months • User-friendly – easy to complete • Ensure that data is only collected once • Supports offline electronic data collection

How did we implement the AQP DMS? • Reviewed off-the-shelf offerings • Too much customization required ($$$) • Didn’t fit into IT landscape • Decision made to build • InfoPath • Outlook • BizTalk • ASP-driven Administrative Web site • SQL Server • Collaboration between: • Learning Systems • College of Flight AQP Team • IT Application Development

  11. What was the outcome? • 24 months of successful use • First successful FAA Annual Review • 7-Figure annual savings on training-related expenses!!!

  12. What’s next? • Integration with flight training schedule to pre-populate offline forms with trainee and instructor information • Offline data collection for ALL flight training events • Inflight curriculum conversion to AQP
