  1. Organic Chemistry Lab 315 Fall, 2016

  2. DUE DATES • Today • Written summary of progress in identifying unknown (see Manual for example). • At end of lab -- copy of laboratory notebook pages for today's experiment • Next Week • At beginning of lab –Organic Qualitative Analysis Report • See web page for instructions (Unknown ID) • Lab Final Exam

  3. Next Week • Lab Final Exam (1.5 hour max.) • Format similar to quizzes (short answer, calculations, etc). • Comprehensive – questions will include material taken from reading, experiments and reports. • There will be special emphasis on material that has been consistently incorrect throughout the semester. • Can use lab notebook (no other resources) and calculator. • Make sure you understand the corrections to the report returned to you today.

  4. In Lab Today • Finish Qualitative Organic Analysis • Resolve qual. test ambiguities, if they exist. • Identify the class of compound that your unknown belongs to (alkane, etc.) based on the results of the Qual. tests. • Finish your written summary describing how you identified your unknown’s functional group. (See example in lab manual) • Come to my desk with your summary and explain your reasoning

  5. In Lab Today • After I approve your verbal summary, and after you clean up, you have permission to take an IR of your unknown. (Write your name on the blackboard and IR’s will be taken in order.) • Empty contents of t-pentyl Cl vial in marked container. (The prep room wants to keep t-pentyl chloride separate from other waste.) • Rinse and return vials.

  6. Last Week’s Report • You took an experimental IR. The report instructions said to attach it, along with a copy of a literature spectrum. The spectrum should have the important characteristic peaks marked. • Separation Scheme: You need to review the concept, and the statements in the t-BuClpowerpoint, and the experiment itself. Look over your graded scheme to see what you did wrong.

  7. Weekly Clean-up • Martinez Cardenas, Lisa • Ott, Kelsey
