  1. Westward Movement Motives for Exploration Explain the motives for the exploration in the West and the push for westward expansion, including the concept of Manifest Destiny, economic opportunities in trade and the availability of rich farmland.

  7. Economic Opportunities in Trade • Many opportunities different from industrial north and large southern plantations • There was a bounty of furs to be hunted in the vast wilderness of the West and then sold in Europe for a profit • Eventually extra items would be traded.

  8. Availability of Inexpensive Rich Farmland • In places such as Oregon • Made it possible for settlers to own their own land and become self-sufficient

  9. A Religious Group that Settled in the West In order to escape religious persecution in the United States, the Mormons moved westward and settled present-day Utah (then in the Mexican territory).
