  1. Thinking Through The Thesis Say that five times fast…

  2. On a sheet of a paper, answer these questions • What is persuasion? • Why do we persuade? ANSWER:

  3. The Steps • Read the prompt • Take a Stance • Write a thesis • Write an outline • Write the essay

  4. Step 1: Read the Prompt Choose one…(that means only 1, not all) To better help students learn the material they need for the real world, school administrators have decided to extend the school week. School will now be held, Monday-Saturday. Because of the amount of accidents that young teens are getting into, legislators have decided to move the age you can get your license from 16-18. Based on the evidence seen at other schools, to help increase student learning, the school day will start 8:15 (instead of 7:45) and will end at 2:45 (instead of 2:15).

  5. Step 2: Take a Stance You’ve chosen a prompt, now you need to take a side. Write down your side.

  6. Step 3: Write a Thesis What is a thesis? The MAIN IDEA of the paper. What you are trying to prove. So, look at the prompt you chose (Mon-Sat, driver license, later start to school) Which side are you on? Now, write a sentence stating which side you are on.

  7. Write a Thesis Look at these examples, order these examples from the BEST to the WORST • I think that we should not have to wear school uniforms. • I know that school uniforms are a bad idea. • I believe that wearing school uniforms is a bad idea. • Students should not have to wear school uniforms. Which one is most like the one you wrote?

  8. Write an Opening Paragraph Re-write your thesis to be the BEST way. Now, you need to introduce your thesis in an opening paragraph. Opening paragraph must… Be interesting Introduce your thesis Briefly mention why your thesis is right

  9. Examples. Thesis: Students should have to wear school uniforms. Violence is bad. Usually violence happens because there is little discipline in school. sometimes that discipline can be helped by changing some of the school rules. One of the rules they can change in the school is making everyone wear the same type of clothes. This can help with discipline and violence. Students should have to wear school uniforms.

  10. Imagine walking into your school and seeing everyone wearing the same clothes. It would feel like some tripped out movie. Now, imagine that a fight breaks out among all of the students. Because they are wearing the same clothes, you can’t even tell who the good guys are and who are the bad guys. Now, some people may think that making students wear uniforms will stop fighting, but students should not be forced to wear school uniforms. Examples. Thesis: Students should not wear school uniforms.

  11. Examples. Thesis: Students should not wear school uniforms. One day I was watching the news and I saw a story about some teens who had got into a fight at school; it was brutal. The pictures on the news showed pools of blood around the floor of the school. During the story, the question was asked why the act of violence had occurred. Not one person, who was interviewed, stated that it was because of the clothes the person had worn. I know the school wants to try and stop violence, and I agree that they should; however, students should not have to wear school uniforms for this to happen. Student should not be forced to wear school uniforms because it will not stop violence in school, it takes away from student individualness and because school uniforms are more expensive, it could lead to more bullying in school.

  12. Basic Outline of Introduction • Interesting fact or story related to thesis. • State the thesis • Briefly state why your thesis is correct. NOW, Practice by taking your thesis, and writing an example paragraph.
