  2. Class Information Homework folders: Homework will be sent home Monday through Thursday. Every Monday, your child will receive the week’s assignments on the homework calendar sheet, and it will be posted on the website. Homework should take about 30-45 minutes, including reading. Please make sure your child brings his or her folder to school each day with their completed assignments. •Third grade has put together integrated project-based homework that we will keep you up to date on via email communication and class websites. • Behavior: • Students will be expected to follow class and school rules. This year we have the 8 Keys of Excellence program to follow. Behavior Consequences are as follows: • Apology Sheet- requires parent signature • Lose a privilege and complete a Reflection Sheet- requires parent signature • Conference with parents • Conference with principal •  = Key notes, and AF’s Eagle Tender are used for incentives. We will have class opportunities each week.

  3. Birthdays: Parents are welcome to bring in a nonfood item for your child’s birthday or half birthday either at recess, before lunch or before end of the school day. Nonedible items are also rewarding- or perhaps donate a book to the class library in your child’s name. Please aim to follow the district’s wellness policy. Volunteers: Schedule to go out Sept. 7th at 8:00am- MUR Everyone A Reader, Room Parents, Math Games, Wednesday Folders, and Copy/Clerical. I will make a schedule for the entire year. I will also put it on our class website for you to download. Field trips will be done as needed.

LANGUAGE ARTS: •Wonders, Write Source, Nancy Fetzer Writing •Rebecca Sitton’s Spelling Program •Zaner Bloser Traditional Handwriting •Class novels, literature circles, novel studies, small group ‘close reading,’ student-selected books Third Grade Curriculum Overview Concepts taught… • Literature(50%): classic literature, author studies, fables, folktales, fairytales, drama, poetry >focusing on the comprehension of message, lesson, moral, and character traits through details •Informational Text / Non-fiction (50%) : comprehension of main idea, text features, compare & contrast two texts •Writing: Narrative, Opinion, Expository >using correct grammar, conventions, spelling, and citing evidence) COPS •Oral Presentations: Current Events, Poetry Recitations, Wax Museum

MATH: •Cognitive Guided Instruction (CGI) along with Investigations curriculum •Problem Solving and Critical Thinking and Class Discussions •Dice, Domino & Card Games to enhance skills (fluency) • Standards of Mathematical Practices Third Grade Curriculum Overview Concepts taught: •Operations/Algebraic Thinking (fluent multiplication/division within 100, solve multi-step word problems, finding patterns in math) •Number and Operations (place value understanding with base 10; fluently add and subtract within 1,000 using a variety of strategies, know the properties of operations) •Fractions (parts of a whole, using a number line, compare & equivalency) •Measurement/Date (time, volume, mass, perimeter, area, represent & interpret data) •Geometry (reason with shapes and attributes; partition shapes into equal parts)
