  1. Kindergarten “Greater Than, Less Than…More and Less” Early Childhood Math Education

  2. Lesson Plan • Title/Introduction: “Greater Than, Less Than & Concepts of More and Less” The children in this kindergarten classroom have been exploring the concepts of greater than and less than, and more and less. They also are investigating the concept of how many more or how many less one number is in comparison to another number. The concept of this lesson/assessment is to give children practice with these concepts in a fun, interactive computer game that also helps both the child and the teacher assess their knowledge. • Subject: The content area is Early Childhood Mathematics. • Topic: The topic of this activity is the concepts of greater than and less than and how many more or less than one number is in comparison to another. Specifically, comparing numbers or sets when one number or set has one to two more or one to two less.

  3. Lesson Plan Continued • Objectives: After this lesson, the children will have gained more knowledge and have more experience with the concepts of greater than and less than, and how many more or how many less than one number is in comparison to another. These are important content standards in early mathematics: OACS: Number and Number Systems 4. Determine ‘how many’ in groups of ten or few objects. KENT CITY: Compare the number of objects in two or more sets when one set has one to two more, or one to two fewer objects. (This is my field experience placement) NCTM: Number and Operations Pre-K-2 1. Count with understanding and recognize “how many” in sets of objects. • Procedures: The experience will begin with a reminder of the concepts explored in this activity/assessment. Children will work with partners on the four classroom computers to explore the activity. During the experience, the teacher will supervise and assist children in reading the slides, but will not intervene otherwise. The purpose is to allow the children to assess their understanding and the PowerPoint is created to allow the children to eventually bring themselves to the correct answer.

  4. Lesson Plan Continued • Evaluation: Before: The children are familiar with the concepts of greater than and less than, but at times it remains a challenging topic. Additionally, the children have experience with problems asking how many more or how many less than one number is in comparison to another. Yet, this concept can be even more challenging at times. During: Supervise and check for understanding. The teacher should assist the children with reading the slides if necessary, but allow children to explore the slides on their own. Also, remain aware of how many attempts it takes the children to arrive at the correct answer. After: This activity will be followed by the daily math lesson. Open the lesson with a discussion of the activity and allow the children to communicate their knowledge and understanding of the topic, and how the PowerPoint helped them to check their own understanding. • Materials: Classroom computers and this activity saved onto each computer.
