DANIEL: THE BOOK • Probably written by Daniel himself • Lived in Exile from 605 B.C. until 536 B.C. • 2 distinct parts: Stories of Faithfulness & Deliverance (chaps. 1-6) & Visions of the Future (chaps. 7-12) • Parts written in Hebrew & parts in Aramaic • “Apocalyptic” style – visions, heavy symbolism • Included among “The Writings” • Contains one of OT’s most distinct references to resurrection of the dead (12:9-13)

  3. DANIEL: MAJOR CHARACTERS • Daniel – A young Jewish exile in Babylon • Shadrach, Meshach, & Abednego – Daniel’s 3 friends • Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar, & Darius – Babylonian kings • Gabriel – God’s angel who interprets visions for Daniel

  4. DANIEL: PLOT • Daniel & friends live in exile in Babylon. Though pressured to worship idols, they refuse & are delivered by God • Daniel receives visions about future events, including the coming of Christ & establishment of His kingdom

DANIEL: MAJOR EVENTS • Daniel & friends decline to eat unclean food • Daniel interprets Nebuchadnezzar’s dream • Shadrach, Meshach, & Abednego refuse to bow to Neb’s. idol • Neb. becomes like a wild animal b/c he doesn’t acknowledge God • Belshazzar sees “the handwriting on the wall” • Daniel refuses to pray to Darius & is cast into the lions’ den • Daniel sees visions of the future, both troubling & hopeful
