  1. Is Metabolic Surgery Safer Than The Usual Treatment? With the increasing rate of adoption of unhealthy lifestyles and a progressive widening in the world’s average waistline circumference over the years, there has been an increase in the burden of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes. Obesity and overweight continue to be on the increase globally. Associated with it is an increased predisposition to various health conditions.

  2. Traditional management options for obesity and overweight have centred on lifestyle changes - exercise, dieting etc - and medications. The results obtained thus far have proven unsatisfactory with the traditional non-invasive management methods. Surgery has emerged as the most effective management option for treating obesity. This is in the form of metabolic surgery which utilizes Bariatric techniques such as ileal interposition, transit bipartition, bariatric surgery sleeve to mention a few. Besides the obvious benefits of rapid weight loss, it has also been reported that individuals who had a bariatric surgery had an improvement in obesity-related complications such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes etc. Due to its invasive nature, many patients and individuals get a little concern about the safety - especially in the long term - of obesity surgery compared to traditional non-invasive treatment approaches. New information from a study

  3. have come out with the finding that obesity surgery is actually safer than traditional approaches. In a collaborative study by researchers at Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University and Clalit Research Institute in Israel, 2 groups of patients were (those who had obesity surgery and those who were managed using traditional approaches) followed up over a 10 year period. The data suggests that patients who had bariatric surgery had a 50% lower death rate than the other group. Thus translates to a longer life for obese individuals who had the procedure done. In addition to about a 50% lower mortality rate, it was also discovered that weight loss achieved via obesity surgery (assessed through a drop in Body Mass Index) led to improvement in hypertension and decreased the incidence of diagnosis of diabetes. Many obese diabetic patients who had surgery were also shown to have had a better blood sugar control with many going into remission.

  4. Although obesity surgery is not without its drawbacks and adverse effects - much like every other medical procedures, overwhelming evidence shows it to be both safe and effective. This is provided that it is carried out by a competent and experienced team. An example is obesity surgery by Metabolic Surgery Clinic.
